What is the Anti-Money Laundering Authority?

The Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA) is the EU's centralised AML supervisory body, headquartered in Frankfurt. Established in 2024, AMLA represents a fundamental shift from decentralised, directive-based AML supervision to a centralised, regulation-based model.

AMLA's role

AMLA's remit covers several areas:

  • Direct supervision of the highest-risk obliged entities across the EU
  • Coordination of national supervisory authorities, including those overseeing non-financial institutions
  • FIU coordination to enhance cross-border intelligence sharing
  • Technical standards to ensure consistent application of the single rulebook

For a detailed analysis of AMLA's impact on non-financial institutions, see our article on what AMLA means for DNFBPs.
